Matt, Harry and their son Hugo share a glass blowing studio in their backyard in Queanbeyan, in a former Arnott’s biscuit factory.
Matthew’s work increasingly lies in sympathetically bringing components together; reflecting through glass how individuals, objects, and ideas might accommodate each other to fit together harmoniously. The process draws upon and adapts the traditional Italian glassblowing techniques. Their compositions allow him to layer and suspend hues of subtle veneers and colours, which emphasise the structural element of the pocket of air within.
Harry is fascinated by how neon and plasma illumination can offer a sense of movement and connection, through the roiling aurora-like activity which these ionised gases offer as a mesmerising agent of wonder. This form of illumination encased within glass is subtly responsive and affords an embodied experience.
On the Arts Trail weekend, you are welcome to wander through their studio. There will be regular neon bending demonstrations and plasma illuminated works to see up close. There will also be prototypes and production ware available for sale. Matt and Harry have a cheeky studio tradition of a trade table with objects available to trade for local honey or a bottle of dry white wine.
