Taking Queanbeyan’s creative pulse with Vicktor Petroff

Did you know? Queanbeyan boasts a rich and long history of artistic expression. From traditional Indigenous art forms, to the burgeoning interest in the arts brought by European settlers in the 19th century, the town has long been a hub of cultural vibrancy.

Today, Queanbeyan is a particularly dynamic centre for the performing arts, boasting a rich array of dance, theatre, comedy and drama. Each season at The Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, lovingly nicknamed ‘The Q’, is always much awaited and never disappoints.

We had a quick chat with Vicktor Petroff, Manager of Economy, Place & Arts, to find out more about what the performing arts means for the region.

What do you believe sets Queanbeyan’s performing arts scene apart from other regions?

“The diversity of experience our performing artists offer is truly unique. Sharing a border with the ACT means we have amazing and talented artists who come to our region from all over Australia and the world—which is unusual in a regional centre.”

In your opinion, what role do performing arts play in fostering a sense of community and belonging in Queanbeyan?

“The performing arts are a chance for people to connect and celebrate. Whether you’re a member of one of our incredible local community theatre groups like the Queanbeyan Players, or just a person who loves live music, theatre, dance or comedy—the arts are an opportunity to share experiences together.”

How does investing in the arts benefit Queanbeyan’s economy?

“Investment in the arts stimulates economic growth in Queanbeyan, attracting visitors, and supporting local businesses.

A thriving arts scene generates employment opportunities for actors, directors, stage managers, technicians, and other arts professionals. This can help keep creative talent in our region, leading to a further enrichment of the arts ecosystem, and feeding back into Queanbeyan’s economy.

The arts provide an especially strong boost to the night time economy, with around 80% of our audiences coming from Canberra. Many of these visitors have never been to our region before, despite the proximity!”

Have you seen any new or popular types of performing arts or cultural activities emerging in Queanbeyan in recent years?

“Comedy and music have always been popular—but certainly in the last few years of stress and uncertainty, comedy has provided a much-needed escape and source of relief.”

And indeed, hilarity will ensue all year long at The Q with these performances coming up soon:

  • The Trojan War (May 14-15, 2024) is a night of laughs and tragedy—as a cast of faux-French performers using this classic tale of gods and heroes to playfully explore the chaos of life.
  • Overweight Lightweight (July 13, 2024) is Dave O’Neil’s new stand-up show, off the back of playing to sold out crowds at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

What events or performances in Queanbeyan are you particularly excited about in 2024?

“The Q’s “Q the Locals” program is especially noteworthy, showcasing the incredible artists around our region.”

  • Eulogiser Bunny (March 16, 2024) is not to be missed; by the power of comedy, Cameron Ribbons joins us to deliver his own quasi-realistic funeral service.
  • The Will To Be (June 13, 2024), an award-winning solo show, is an exploration of Australia’s queer history, laced with the words of Shakespeare.

Ignite imaginations with fun spectacles for the kids, including You Are A Doughnut, an all-singing, all-dancing exploration of the digestive system (March 22-23, 2024). In spring, head out as a family to the comedy concert, Make some noise! With the Listies (September 13-14, 2024).

So whether you’re an artist, enthusiast, or simply curious, there’s something for everyone. Get involved in upcoming events and be part of the cultural heartbeat of Queanbeyan today.
