Whether you’re drawn to art, adventure, or history; exploring solo; entertaining little ones; or looking for something different to do—our region has it all. From Braidwood, Bungendore, to Queanbeyan, there are plenty of opportunities to make the free-spirited memories of a lifetime; for free.

1. For the animal lovers

Make fur-ever friends at Luckystars Sanctuary. Here, you can meet and interact with animals that have been abandoned or are in need of a new home. They may be injured or orphaned and are receiving expert care at the Sanctuary, whose team is made up entirely of volunteers.

With sheep, ponies, alpacas, chickens—and more—in need of a pat or two, it’s a wholesome and rewarding way to spend time with the family.

Located in Bywong, Luckystars Sanctuary holds donation-based tours on most days at 3pm. Afternoon tea is included. You can register on Eventbrite.

2. For the history buffs

Learn about the stories of our region at Queanbeyan Museum, entirely volunteer-run. The building itself is significant: built in 1876, it is the Old Police Sergeant’s Residence and a good example of Victorian Regency-style architecture.

The Museum offers themed displays showcasing Queanbeyan‘s history. Explore insights into the Ngambri people, early settlers and the town’s evolution; tales from convict and gold rush days bushrangers and take a peek at vintage cameras, radios and musical instruments.

The Museum is open on weekends only from 1-4pm: entry is free, donations are welcome and street parking is available in front of or across from the Museum. Parking is also available on the corner of Lowe Street and Farrer Place, behind Monaro Street and near Queanbeyan Park.

3. For the art lovers

The historic village of Bungendore has a thriving arts scene with a number of beautiful galleries to explore. From award-winning photography at Rushe Photography Gallery, woodwork creations at Bungendore Wood Works Gallery, contemporary artworks at Water Through Reeds, to ceramics and silverworks at X Gallery as well as original paintings at Bungendore Fine Art —there is something for everyone.

In the heart of Bungendore Village is Suki & Hugh Gallery, who have cultivated a reputation for inspiring, engaging exhibitions that celebrate the work of exciting artists.

Specialising in fine arts with an emphasis on glass, ceramics, painting and works on paper, their exhibition program means there is always something stunning to explore.

They will often mark a new exhibition with opening drinks and nibbles too—so keep an eye on their Instagram for details.

At the time of this article, the exhibition is Regarding Dreams as Water Moons by Canberra painters, Peter Jordan and Sara Freeman. The name draws inspiration from a Buddhist poem, reminding us that life is as transient as the reflection of the moon on the water.

4. For the adventurers

Just 40 minutes from Braidwood is a short 4km return hike with big history and big views: the Big Hole Walking Track.

The Big Hole is a spectacular limestone cave, over 100 metres deep and 50 metres wide. It was discovered in 1862 by a young man named Boxall who found it with four long saplings, a rope and a candle.

Thought to be around 400 million years old, this marvel can be reached from Berlang campground, wading across Shoalhaven River and hiking through dry eucalypt forest and unique nana heath.

If you’re feeling particularly energetic, extend the adventure by continuing onto Marble Arch or return to Shoalhaven River for a picnic and a swim.
