Back in business: Bungendore’s local legends

The Royal Hotel

After 3 and a half years, during which the building was stripped down to bedrock, the historic Royal Hotel has reopened earlier this year.

The renovations were critical—to ensure the 141-year-old pub’s legacy continues on.

Alongside structural restorations, the original façade and some stone and brick work have been lovingly preserved. The verandah and heritage-listed iron lacework are cherished remnants of Bungendore’s past.

The Royal Hotel offers wallet-friendly, old-fashioned pub fare alongside signature hospitality. Mark your calendar for Bungendore Car and Bike Show, Bungendore Rodeo and ANZAC Day; all promising to be fantastic events at “the top pub”.

Open from 11am daily.

Scrumpers Kitchen

Ruth Gaha-Morris, beloved caterer and Southern Harvest Association’s operations manager, embodies the ‘living local’ ethos. From her home-based roots, she’s grown Scrumpers Kitchen into a thriving restaurant.

At Scrumpers, the menu is entirely local and seasonal. Everything is made in-house by Ruth, often with a Lebanese flair to pay homage to her heritage. Interiors are warm and cosy, with local art and second-hand or locally-crafted furnishings.

Expect daily menu changes driven by produce. Savour dishes like succulent lamb shoulder with Panzanella, pork loin poached in Four Pinots and apple pudding cake—all served by Ruth herself.

Open for dinner Monday and Thursday; for lunch and dinner on Friday and for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday.

Sapling Yard Cellar Door

Right beside Scrumpers Kitchen is where you’ll find Sapling Yard Cellar Door.

Over the years, Carla Rodeghiero and Malcolm Burdett have been praised for their winemaking, achieving a balance of texture, savouriness and length.

Pick up a bottle or better yet, take a seat. In a single showcase of the region’s best flavours, enjoy wine tastings paired with cicchetti (Italian for small plates) from Scrumpers. Indulge in delights like Devilish Pesto Eggs, paired with Sapling Yard’s 2023 Fiori; an aromatic field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Muscat grapes.

Keep an eye out for Happy Hour specials and events as Sapling Yard has a special love of local partnerships!

Open for tastings on Fridays and weekends.

Southern Harvest Association

Connected to the Cellar Door is Southern Harvest’s volunteer-run community store.

Much like their stall at the weekly Farmers Market, the community store is where the SHA’s member farmers and producers can sell their goods. Think fresh fruit and vegetables, preserves, meat, eggs, olive oil, honey, pasta and more.

On Wednesdays, there’s also a delivery of fresh goods from Three Mills Bakery.

A selection of fresh-frozen bread is also available; to keep you going throughout the week.

Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and weekends.
